Honors College/Learning Community

Postby mmartucci90 on Sun Jul 06, 2008 2:57 am

Hi, I'm attending Drexel in the fall and i have a question concerning the Pennoni Honors College vs the Engingeering Learning Community -

I applied to both programs. I was accepted into the the ELC, and the Honors college said if I can keep a 3.75 GPA for the first semester, I would make it in. If I go into the ELC for now, can i leave the program and go into the honors prgram if I eventually make it? How exactly would that work? And concerning the ELC, what kind of activites do the students participate in? And my last question - I know that the ELC kids have some classes together - Do they have classes with only eachother, or are other kids in their classes? Do they have every class together, or just some?

Sorry, i know there's a bunch of questions jumbled in there.

To answer your questions.

-The ELC is a program for freshman where students in the same major (in this case engineering) all live on the same floor in the Myers residance hall. As a freshman in the engineering program, you take all of your core pre-reqs. That is: Calc, physics, bio, chem, humanities, lab, etc. Thus, ALL FRESHMAN ENGINEERS take the same courses (barring AP placement of course). So, everyone on you floor may not have lecture the same time as you, but for the most part, they will all be taking the same courses.....giving you the opportunity to do homework, projrcts, and study together.

-Concerning the topic of the honors college and the ELC....they are not mutually exclusive organizations (you can be in both at the same time).

thanks so much - that helps a lot.

except for one thing - when i applied to the ELC, it said you can't be in the honors college and the ELC at the same time because the honors college has a learning community of its own.. something like that.. i guess since they each have their own dorm building.

any preference/reccomendations for either?

I believe it means that you cannot live in the Honors residance hall, and be involved in the ELC......If I had my choice between the two, I would recommend choosing the Honors Residance Hall (Race Street) over the ELC.

However, this recommendation is based off of the fact that Race St. residance hall has a suite-style setup.

Each hall has its benefits, it's up to you to decide which benefits are more important.
